Part of the effort to continually promote health in New Albany, the New Albany Walking Club organizes group walks, health and training seminars, organized training programs for aspiring racers, and participation in walking-only races such as the New Albany Walking Classic. The club also meets year-round, setting out at 7:30 a.m. every Sunday on varying routes through the community, providing opportunities for fitness and for camaraderie among participants.
Starting out with just 16 plots in its inaugural year of 2011, the New Albany Community Garden now boasts 50 raised garden beds, including children’s plots, for members of the community. And it’s more than just a place for those without gardens to grow their own food and other plants; it also features a locked tool storage shed, rain barrel system and Herb Demonstration Garden, along with an annual potluck dinner. On top of that, all surplus harvest is donated to the New Albany Food Pantry.
